Passion and grit have been their middle names. Jiwaji University, Gwalior may have lost their first match in the Toyota University Cricket Championship against Jain University, Bengaluru by 39 runs but they are not giving up easily.

Skipper Shoraab Dhaliwal is the mascot of this team full of bravehearts. "Yes, we are disappointed losing the game, but we were doing quite well till the 16th over when Jain University batted. The 19th over where we gave away 24 runs killed out fight," explained the Jiwaji skipper in a post-match chat at Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday night.

It wasn't easy chasing Jain University's 171/8, said Dhaliwal. "The ball was not coming onto the bat and we couldn't play our natural game. But we still have two more games to go and we shall bounce back," the mustachioed Gwalior lad said.

For Jain University, Tuesday's contest was a repeat of the Rohinton Baria semifinal in Manipal in January this year. The Bengaluru team had won a close match against Jiwaji, but in the TUCC it turned out to be an easy win.

Skipper Kaunain Abbas, who struck a breezy 48-ball 74 to win the man of the match award, said: "All our hard work is paying off. Initially we were not up for the match, but we came back into the match."

Abbas, who is the only centurion of the TUCC so far, is becoming quite a leader. On Tuesday, he stood like a rock and his 78-run seventh wicket stand was the bedrock of the Jain University innings.

"Yes, I have a role to play. We lost wickets early, but I knew that if I could bat till the end, we will have a good total," Abbas said. He was the seventh man out with three balls remaining of their quota of 20 overs.
